Given the controversial nature of organ sales, it is often difficult to discuss the issue rationally, for the idea of trading one's organs sounds almost too suicidal, almost beyond belief.
Controversial it may be, pragmatism and a poignant view of the chronic global shortage of organs, plus the long waiting list for organ transplants, means that organ sales may be the last resort to address this rather pressing issue.
Discussion Question:
Should people be allowed to sell a kidney for transplantation?

ReplyDeleteIn my thoughts about selling each other's kidneys can be a good way to save a life or transplant a bad one out. But considering also dangerous due to the risks of surgery that can affect during the process and anything could happen that would be fatal to the victim who is removing the kidney out. One can be enough to live with but also the stakes can increase to become of having a short life span. Unless it is also a good deed to share a kidney to someone who is close to akin or a related friend that seriously need it as well. However that a small organ of life such as a kidney is capable of the decision for life or death and thinking over the choice of sacrifice or personal Health that wont be shared to anyone which to me seems awfully difficult to decide based on the situation.

In my opinion I believe that a person should be able to decide whether or not they would like to be able to sell their kidney, especially if they believe that it can help someone else. I do understand the point that others make when someone says that they might just be in it for the money, like the teen in this article (http://news.yahoo.com/chinese-teen-sells-kidney-buy-iphone-ipad-072601309.html). This person obviously did it for a very selfish reason. On the other hand, one never knows maybe the person who is trying to sell the kidney is doing it because they are in desperate need for money to pay something back or buy something that they are in desperate need of. For example, maybe the person needs money to go buy food for their newborn child and the last possible resource they had to get the money was to sell their kidney. This in my opinion would be a unselfish reason to sell their kidney. In the end I believe its really up to the person and the reasons they have for selling their kidneys.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your argument. Although I feel as that any the person that is selling the kidney is selfish in a way because he is doing it for money, a materialism purpose.
DeleteWilber A. Gutierrez
I agree with what you say about the money, however there are still many other resources where that person can get money in a different way. Selling a kidney is a bit too extreme for food. With a newborn there will be people there to help out the mother get back on her feet, especially if it is her first born. She will not be as lucky with the second child but there will still be some help but not as much as before, because by then that girl should be on her feet.

I agree with your argument. Although some people might sell their kidney for selfish reasons, there are people out there who do it out of need. Even those who do it for selfish reasons are still donating a kidney which can potentially save a life. Either way, someone is benefiting from this process.
DeleteImagine someone you have grown-up with and know a lot about and now he or she needs help to survive. Would you ignore the injured and walk away? Even though you can prevent the tragedy from happening?
DeleteI agree with your argument. Some people do sell their organs for personal reasons and yes I believe that it is selfish. I think that if a person wants to sell their organs, so be it. If their organ saves someone else then it is fine in my opinion.

One should not sell their kidney, for the reason being that one day he/she might need it.According to medical research you only need one kidney to live but what if the kidney that was just sold to someone else might be necessary for the seller in an upcoming battle with their own body.Selling a body part that might be necessary one day is almost like suicide because something can always go wrong with the transplant.
ReplyDeleteWhat if a family member is in need of a kidney? Whould your assertion change?
DeleteWhat if it is the only way to get money? I think it depends on the person. If they want to sell it they can and I'm sure they know there are always risks to given an organ.
Delete-Marisol Jacobo
i understand with what you are trying to say. I also disagree because what if someone needs it. You only need one kidney to live.
DeleteKidney transplants may be beneficial to the one receiving the kidney, on the other hand it can cause the other person harm. No they should not sell their kidneys for transplants. That is why there is such a thing as a donor. So when a person dies all of his good organs go to the person in need. Yes, it may be a long waiting line for the person who needs it but the donor needs to live too. If they were able to sell their organs then it would be like them selling their own life away. Who would want to do that? That is just a terrible thing to do. What if that person needs the money? there are plenty of other ways that will get the person the same amount of money if not even more.
ReplyDelete-Jesus Alcantar
I understand that it is a stupid thing to do to give away an organ for money, but everyone has the right to make their own decision with what they want to do with their own body. What if you needed the kidney? Would you honestly care if the person you are receiving the kidney from sold it because they wanted the money and only cared for the money? If you are given a kidney that is a perfect match and gives you the chance to live it is a good thing. In the end of the day a kidney being sold is actually helping many people out there.
DeleteI strongly agree with your perspective about there being various ways to receive the same amount of money as transplanting one's organs. Except keep in mind that when a person is being pressured from economic problems then the person will tend to focus their attention on the most reliable and fastest money making resource. In this case the resource is organ transplanting, from one person to another, preformed by vigilant doctors who will only worry about their own paycheck at the end of the day. Furthermore, Donor's organs are the second choice to receiving a transplant, and I agree with you about there being a long waiting list. Sometimes people will get lucky enough, if the receiver before hand dies, but lets be real who would not try to keep that person, if being one's family member, alive until being the one next in the list for an organ. The quickest and most shortest path will always be the answer to a problem. So why wait?
Delete-Jesy Amaro
I understand with what you are trying to say, but there's a waiting list for kidney transplant. Selling your kidney can be a much faster process and can save a persons life who's on that waiting list.
DeleteAlthough it is very evident that a large amount of people are in a waiting list to get a kidney transplant and that there is a few that would consider to even give up their own kidney to save someone’s life. Many people believe that a solution to this problem is for people to sell their own kidneys, but those people will make monetary benefits from the kidneys that at one point were donated and now sold. I disagree with the claim because when someone sells their kidney, they are simply doing it for the money and not to help someone but to make personal gain, a selfish act that also will cause many problems in the future. For example, if they decide to sell the organs, what would be the price of the kidney? In addition since its commerce the federal government will get involved in this issue which makes the process of selling a kidney very difficult. Also the rich will be the only ones that will benefit because if they sell the organ in a high price, of course the wealthy are the only ones that will afford to have a kidney transplant while the poor will die because of insufficient money. However, I do believe its ones choice to sell or not to sell a kidney but should it really come down to the point that to save a life we will need money in exchange?
ReplyDeleteWilber A. Gutierrez
Even if they are selling a kidney for selfish needs, in a way they are still helping because the kidney would be used for good not bad.
DeleteOne should be allowed to sell their own kidney for transplantation. It may be for a very selfish reason or unselfish reason, we should all be able to do what we desire with our own organs. Some may think that selling an organ is putting your life in danger, and this may be true. Those who wish to sell a kidney should known the consequences and with out a doubt know exactly what they are getting themselves into. Some people may believe that those who wish to sell their organs for selfish reasons might be trying to sell a poor kidney that could danger the life of others. To not risk the lives of those who need a kidney, an agreement must be taken into action. Documents should be provided to prove that every result matches one hundred percent so that it would not be a fraud. This will assure the patients in need that it is a perfect match. Overall, people should be allowed to do what they wish with their kidney or any other private organ.
ReplyDeleteI think us people should be allowed to donate our kidney. Selling it limits the people on receiving a kidney transplant becuase some people can not afford a kindey. I believe it should be given to children first in critical condition then so on to adults.
ReplyDeleteWhat if the donor was an alcohol abuser?
Delete-Christian hetzler
Although kidney transplants can be very dangerous to the person donating the organ and the person receiving it, people should be able to sell their kidneys because it can potentially save a person’s life. Even though some people might just sell their kidney for the money and not to save someone’s life, the kidney is still useful to someone out there. Selling a kidney should be allowed because it can help both people involved. The person selling the kidney would receive money for something they might need, and the person receiving the kidney could potentially live longer. When a kidney transplant goes into play, tests should be done on the person donating the kidney just to be sure that it is a good organ and would save a person’s life instead of putting it in harm’s way.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to the controversial topic of selling a kidney for a transplant, most of us will readily agree that it should be allowed because it will help those in need. Others may argue that it should not be allowed because it may be harmful to both the donor and the person receiving the kidney. Both seem like valid claims, but in my opinion, I think that people should be allowed to sell their kidney in order to help others out. Yes, the fact that they receive money may seem selfish but it is efficient, especially with a long list of those waiting for a transplant. The donors should be aware of the situation and of the consequences. In situations like these, the focus should be on saving lives, rather than to criticize the decisions of others.
ReplyDeleteI agree because it is the donor's decision in donating their kidney. It can be for economic issues but it can also be to save lifes. It can benifit both families because of the kidney transplant. If anything were to happen, it should not be judged upon any one because it is not their body or any part of thir issue.
Delete-Adriana Barragan
Yes, you said it very clear "the focus should be on saving lives" not money. Also if they are called donors, why are they getting something in exchange? Donating blood has the similar process but in this case a person is actually a donor because they are not asking for money in return.
DeleteWilber A. Gutierrez
Donating a kidney can help save a life, whether it is family or not. The donor has their own opinion in what to do in a situation like that. The donor should be aware of the consequences if donating their kindey. Although the donor's family may have concerns about donating the kidney for transplant, at the end of the day bit is the donors final say that matters. Therefore everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if chosen to donate a kidney they will have to suffer the consequences.
ReplyDelete-Adriana Barragan
i strongly agree with what you have stated. It all comes down to the choice of the people who are giving up the kidney.
DeleteWould you still agree with it even if money is involved?
I believe that people have a choice on whether they want to sell their kidneys or organs in general. If a person needs money and they are willing to sell their kidneys people should respect their decision. It depends on the situation and why a person needs to sell their kidneys. I am for it because if someone is willing to sell their kidneys someone else is off the waiting list. There is also a life that can be saved.
ReplyDelete-Marisol Jacobo
The idea of selling an organ depends on the individual. I am for it because the kidney can take someone else off of the waiting list. That kidney could potentially lengthen their lives. I am fully aware that some may do it for selfish reasons but even then it is a kidney that someone may need. I also know that the surgery is not always a safe procedure but the patients do sign a liability paper.
ReplyDelete-Marisol Jacobo
People should be able to sell their kidneys because it coud makes you a hero and earn you alot of money. For example, more than 92,000 americans are on the waiting list for an organ. If you could save one of these people in need and make a life changing chunk of change for yourself and your family, why not sell your organs. The promise of money could motivate people who wouldnt consider to donate their organs. Additionally, you can tattoo your body that benefits no one but selling your organs to save a life can benefit you and your family
